Attendance
Be on Time and Ready
Registering for a class implies a commitment to the time allotted for the course. My lectures are designed with the expectation that you are already familiar with the material through pre-studying. Students are expected to arrive on time and be prepared to work. You are expected to come to class with the reading assignments completed. If you do not at least skim the materials before class, you are losing out on the context of the lectures and other class work. These classes are heavily dependent on lectures, videos, and discussions, so attendance and participation are crucial. I have observed year after year that those who do not have a habit of coming to class fail. Unless there is a class-based assignment, there is no mandatory attendance. I do not take role and do not assign attendance points (except in the form of extra credit, at the times determined by this instructor). I make the most important announcements in the first 5 minutes of class. You miss this time, you miss the announcements. It is that simple.
Inclement Weather/Assignments Due
If there is inclement weather that closes the campus, then the due date is automatically extended to the next class day after the campus is reopened.Under normal circumstances I do not accept any assignments by email. If the campus is not closed, but the weather can be documented as of sufficient severity, I will accept emailed work. I still require a 'hard copy' on the next possible class day, as I will not be spending my time opening and printing student work. No matter what the campus decision is about whether to open the campus during inclement weather, I urge you to be conservative when making a decision about coming in if there are poor road conditions. No grade is worth your life or your vehicle.
Vacations and Excused Absences
Students should avoid scheduling other appointments, vacations, or so forth during class time. You would never ask your boss to do this; do not ask me either. I make NO accommodations for these unexcused absences. Absences may be excused by official documentation, but I do not create make-up work. If you have an officially documented excuse at your fingertips, you have the time to complete assignments early. Please do so.
Missed Coursework
Do not use other students' time to catch up on missed class work or assignment explanations you missed. Absentees are responsible for getting information on their own time, not at the expense of the rest of the class. You may solicit materials from the instructor during office hours or by appointment. If you ask a fellow student to take notes, do not expect automatic accommodation by this fellow student and think how you might show your appreciation to him/her if they do your work for you. Personally, I would NEVER give a fellow student my only copy of lecture notes, EVER! I do not make accommodations for missed examinations so there is never a need to inform me of missed examination days.
